The theobromine in chocolate that stimulates the cardiac and nervous systems is too much for dogs, especially smaller pups. A chocolate bar is poisonous to dogs and can even be lethal.

Laura Leighton V.M.D.
 
Laura Leighton grew up in Lincoln, Maine and attended St. Lawrence University and University of Maine for her pre-veterinary studies, before attending and graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. She has been practicing small and farm animal medicine with Penobscot Veterinary Services since September of 2007. Her Medical interests include reptile and wildlife medicine, turtles in particular, bovine and poultry medicine and she hopes to pursue oncology as well as holstic medicine. She and her husband reside in Orono, with their dog, cat and turtle.
